FAQs
Where can I find the shade on the Face Shield Flex bottle?
The shade is now indicated on a tinted sticker located on the back of the bottle. Previously, it was noted on the front above the SPF label. While the packaging has changed, the formula and shades remain the same.
Why does the product appear white when dispensed?
The white base contains encapsulated pigments that activate when rubbed into your skin. As you blend, the pigments release and adjust to your natural tone and undertones, delivering even, medium coverage and a flawless finish.
How do I choose my shade?
Choose the same shade you use in the Sunforgettable® Brush-on Shield SPF 50 or Tint du Soleil® Whipped Foundation.
Is this suitable for all skin tones?
Yes. The formula is available in six flexible shades, ranging from Fair to Rich Deep, and is designed to adjust to a wide variety of tones. While mineral SPF actives like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide can be opaque, Colorescience® uses iron oxide pigments to reduce chalkiness and improve HEV light protection.
How do I apply it?
Follow these three steps:
Activate: Dispense and gently rub between fingertips to release pigments.
Develop: Apply to moisturized skin and blend until the white disappears.
Set: Allow 1–2 minutes for the shade to fully adjust.
Do I need to use tools like brushes or sponges?
No. Apply using fingertips only to fully activate the encapsulated pigments and ensure proper SPF coverage.
How often should I reapply?
Reapply every 2 hours during sun exposure. For on-the-go touch-ups, use the Total Protection™ Brush-on Shield SPF 50.
What level of coverage does it provide?
Delivers medium coverage with one layer and can be built up for fuller coverage.
How can I achieve fuller coverage?
Wait 1 minute between layers. Apply up to two additional layers or top with liquid or powder foundation for enhanced coverage.
Can I combine Face Shield Flex with other Face Shield products?
Yes! All Face Shields are SPF 50 / PA++++ and water-resistant for 40 minutes. Mix, layer, or spot-apply depending on your skin’s needs and the look you want.
Examples:
Classic + Flex: Use Classic all over, spot-apply Flex for targeted coverage.
Glow + Flex: For radiance, mix Glow with Flex or apply Glow to highlight areas.
Bronze + Flex: Add warmth by mixing Bronze with Flex or use Bronze for contouring.
Matte + Flex: Use Matte for shine control, then layer Flex for an even-toned, matte finish.
How long does the bottle last?
Approximately 90 days, depending on frequency and amount used.
Should I apply moisturizer first?
Yes. Apply to moisturized skin for best results, especially for dry or fragile skin.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
Yes. Formulated with mineral-only SPF actives, it’s hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, oil-free, and ideal for all skin types.
Does it work for oily or acne-prone skin?
Yes. It’s oil-free, non-comedogenic, and dermatologist-recommended. Always consult your physician for specific skin concerns.
What kind of finish does it have?
A demi-matte finish – a natural balance between dewy and matte.
When should I apply before sun exposure?
Apply 15 minutes before sun exposure. Allow 1–2 minutes for full pigment development.
How much should I use?
Use at least a nickel-sized amount for your face, and more for your neck and décolleté.
How should I use it with the Brush-on Shield SPF 50?
Apply Face Shield Flex SPF 50 in the morning, then use the Brush-on Shield SPF 50 for easy reapplication throughout the day.
How does it differ from Tint du Soleil® Whipped Foundation?
Tint du Soleil® SPF 30: Creamy foundation with moderate to full coverage.
Face Shield Flex SPF 50: Lightweight fluid with flexible medium coverage and full environmental protection. Layer them for enhanced results.
In what order should I apply Face Shield Flex in my routine?
Use after moisturizer and primer (if used) as the first step in your makeup routine.
Can I use it with a primer?
Yes. Apply Primer SPF 20 first, followed by Face Shield Flex SPF 50.
Can I use it with Even Up® or All Calm®?
Yes. Apply Even Up® or All Calm® first, let dry for about 1 minute, then follow with Face Shield Flex SPF 50.
Is there an expiration date?
Yes. Face Shield Flex SPF 50 has a 2-year shelf life (see bottle or carton). After opening, use within 12 months.
Is it water- and sweat-resistant?
Yes. It’s water/sweat resistant for up to 40 minutes.
Can I apply it around my eyes?
Use caution near the eyes. If you prefer eye-safe SPF, try our Brush-on Shield SPF 50, Sport Stick SPF 50, or Color Balms SPF 50, which are ophthalmologist-tested.
Why does Face Shield Flex have a higher PA rating than other Face Shields?
Each formula varies slightly. Though they share SPF 50 and mineral actives, Flex’s formula composition gives it a PA++++ rating – the highest UVA protection rating.
What’s the difference between UVA and UVB protection?
UVB: Causes redness and burning.
UVA: Leads to pigmentation and aging.
Face Shield Flex SPF 50 provides Broad Spectrum protection from both.
What does PA++++ mean?
PA measures UVA protection (skin darkening). PA++++ means >16x longer protection than unprotected skin (80+ minutes).
What is EnviroScreen® Technology?
A proprietary blend that combines Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide with specialty antioxidants to protect against UVA/UVB, pollution, blue light, and infrared radiation.
How is water/sweat resistance tested?
Using FDA guidelines, a panel applies the product before 2–4 immersion cycles in a whirlpool. SPF is then measured; Flex retains SPF 50 after 40 minutes of water exposure.
How is pollution protection tested?
Via electron spin resonance (ESR), which measures free radicals on protected vs. unprotected skin exposed to pollution and UV.
How is blue light (HEV) protection tested?
Formulas are applied to a transparent surface and measured for their ability to block HEV wavelengths using the same dose as FDA SPF testing.
